I hate I'm a celebrity, but... (content is king)

I hate I'm a celebrity, but... (content is king)

I haven't watched a single episode, not even a snippet on Gogglebox, but we can learn from I'm a celebrity. We can learn that if anyone challenges us to eat a cockroach or an eyeball, we must say we are vegan. Secondly, we can clearly see how to generate, share and reuse content. Content is after all, king.

I haven't seen anything live or on catch-up TV, but the sheer volume of memes and social media posts, retweets and shares has informed me about pretty much everything that has been going in in the jungle (and I really don't care).

Lessons from down under:

  1. Capture everything - you never know when a behind the scenes photo might come in handy, or a shot at an event you attended and so on.
  2. Share - tell people what is going on, even the little things (especially if your work can offer before and after stories).
  3. Reuse - don’t just mention it once, keep sharing and reinforcing the message.
  4. Repurpose - don’t put an item on one type of media, maximise your entire marketing mix.
  5. Let your audience do the talking - reviews, shareable content, engage and respond, keep the conversation going.
  6. Imagery - so important, everybody responds to visuals - the image doesn’t always have to relate directly to  the post - attention grabbing pics draw people in, even if they aren't obviously related.
  7. Humour spreads like wildfire - Marketers in creative agencies during the early noughties and probably before this refer to this as ‘surprise and delight’
  8. Hot topics - jump on the bandwagon!
  9. Treasure it - like a time capsule keep that content locked up for later. Look at gin. Gin was something Pat Butcher used to drink in the Queen Vic, noone cared about gin. Now Shoreditch is wall to wall with giant gin glasses full of peppercorns and sprigs of things.
  10. Relatable works. Look at the humour from Peter Kay when the phone rings at 10pm - ‘who’s that?’ or the dancing walk when your song comes on at the wedding disco. Come on, we’ve all done it. The more relatable, honest and open your communications are the better, people can understand and empathise during the hard times as well as celebrate and laugh with you during the good.

These are some simple, easy to take measures towards success in what you do. Also be yourself, you represent your business, no matter how big your business is, your personality, commitment and success will be driven by you, as the heart of your business and your passion and ethics should shine through in your email newsletters, social media, website, telesales scripts and beyond. Classic business expression alert! People buy from people. It’s so true though isn’t it.
